Designed and Installed by One Knoxville Crew

Most landscape plans go wrong in the handoff. A designer draws something that looks great on paper, then a different crew shows up to build it and finds out the yard slopes toward the house, the soil is solid clay, or the “full sun” bed sits under a white oak. Gladiator SOD and Landscaping designs and installs, so the plan is drawn by the people who will build it.

We started as a sod company, and it is still what we are best known for. That shapes how we design: grading and drainage get solved first, lawn areas are placed where the right grass will actually thrive, and beds, walls, and patios are laid out around them. The result is a yard that still works in year five, not just on install day.

Every design is installed by our own in-house crew, never subcontractors, for homes and commercial properties across Knoxville, Farragut, Oak Ridge, and Lenoir City.

What Your Landscape Design Covers

A Gladiator design is a working plan for the whole yard, not just a planting list. Depending on your property, it covers:

  • Grading and drainage: where water goes now, where it needs to go, and how the grade gets corrected before anything is planted.
  • Lawn areas: where grass belongs and which variety fits the sun and traffic. We install Bermuda, fescue, and Zeon zoysia sod.
  • Planting beds: trees, shrubs, perennials, and privacy screens chosen for East Tennessee, finished with mulch or river rock.
  • Hardscape layout: patios, walkways, retaining walls, and seating walls placed where they make the yard more usable.
  • Irrigation: an irrigation system zoned to the plan, so new sod and plantings get the water they need.
  • Outdoor living: room for an outdoor fireplace, a pergola, or an outdoor kitchen, now or later.
  • Phasing: when the budget calls for it, a plan you can build in stages, with grading and drainage done first so later phases never undo earlier work.

Residential Landscape Design

Curb appeal for the front yard, a backyard the family actually uses, a fix for the corner that floods every storm. We design around how you live on the property, how much upkeep you want, and what your budget allows this year, then install it with the same crew that drew it.

Commercial Landscape Design

Office buildings, retail frontage, HOA entrances, and multifamily properties need landscapes that look sharp and hold up with minimal upkeep. We design commercial grounds for durability, drainage, and clean sightlines, then install them in-house. See our commercial landscaping services.

Designed for East Tennessee Yards

A plan copied from a magazine will not survive a Knoxville yard. What decides whether a landscape lasts here is mostly what you cannot see in a photo:

  • Red clay soil. It holds water, compacts, and starves roots. Planting beds and new lawn areas need soil prep, not plants set straight into clay, and the plan accounts for it.
  • Slopes and runoff. Hillside lots in West Knoxville, Farragut, and Oak Ridge send water toward foundations and wash out beds. Grading, drainage, and retaining walls go into the plan first.
  • Shade from mature trees. Established oaks and maples shade out Bermuda. We match grass and plants to the light the yard actually gets. Our guide to the best grass type for a Tennessee yard explains how we choose.
  • Lake lots. Properties on Fort Loudoun, Melton Hill, and Tellico Lake need erosion control, shoreline-friendly planting, and sometimes a sea wall.
  • Freeze-thaw winters. Walls, patios, and edging go on proper bases so they stay put through January.

Plant choices follow your USDA zone (see our Tennessee planting zones map) and how much maintenance you want. For privacy, evergreen trees that do well in Tennessee are usually the backbone of the plan.

Our Landscape Design Process

From the first walk-through to the final cleanup, one team handles your project.

1. Site visit: We walk the property with you, look at sun, slope, soil, and drainage, and talk through how you want to use the yard and how much you want to maintain.

2. Design: We draw the plan, covering grading, lawn areas, beds, hardscape, and irrigation, with plant and material selections.

3. Review and written quote: We go over the plan together, make your changes, and give you a firm written price. If the budget calls for it, we split the plan into phases.

4. Installation: Our own crew builds it in the right order: grading and drainage, hardscape, irrigation, sod, then planting and mulch.

5. Walkthrough and care: We walk the finished project with you and leave watering and care instructions for new sod and plants.

5-star experience from start to finish. Scheduling a quote online was incredibly easy, the pricing was transparent, and the entire crew was beyond professional. The quality of their work is incredible. They move quickly and efficiently while still paying close attention to the details. Any time I had a question, Will or someone on his team got back to me in a timely manner. I would recommend Gladiator Sod to anyone looking for sod or landscaping work. I wouldn’t hire anyone else moving forward. They have definitely earned my business for any future sodding or landscaping projects.

Just had an approximate 4,000 square ft of zeon zoysia installed. Entire process went very well from getting a quote, getting work scheduled, and project completed. I had gotten 3 quotes- one provider was about 25% higher and another was slightly less than Gladiator SOD. I went with Gladiator SOD as I felt installing sod was more of their primary work versus an additional service that other landscaping companies may do on the side from time to time. Speaking with the project head on installation day, he confirmed with me that sod installation is probably 75% of their jobs. The sod itself came delivered from Super Sod, and you can tell it was freshly cut and in great shape. No issues at all there. The installation went smoothly, which included removing existing grass, grading work, and installation of new sod. Everyone was professional, helpful, and courteous. The site was kept clean and all the other little things you can think of or might worry about it were handled as they should be. Overall, great experience and would recommend. Picture is of the backyard day of completion.

Hiring Gladiator’s team to landscape our empty lot was the best decision we made . We worked together on the best way to accommodate the unevenness of the land and get the beauty of the lot once it was finished. Will and his team are very hard working people, responsible, keeping us informed every step of the way and stayed the course until it was finished. There were a few things that we needed to change and they went the extra mile to make sure that took place and we were satisfied as customers. The grass is growing beautifully now and everything looks amazing. Thank you Will. Way to go!

I originally left a negative review because there was some issues during the project. However, I’m updating my review because Gladiator Sod reached out and made everything right. I honestly have a lot of respect for a company that is willing to own a mistake and take the time to fix it. That says a lot about their character and the way they run their business. It would have been easy to ignore the issue, but instead they reached out, followed through, and made sure everything was taken care of. In today’s world, it’s rare to see that level of accountability and customer care, and I really appreciated the effort they made to correct the situation. Because of that, I will absolutely be using Gladiator Sod again in the future and would recommend them to others. It was genuinely refreshing to see a company step up and make things right.

Landscape Design FAQs

How much does a design-and-install landscaping project cost in Knoxville?

Most of our Knoxville design-and-install projects fall between $5,000 and $20,000, depending on property size, grading and drainage needs, how much sod and hardscape the plan includes, and plant sizes. Full backyard builds with patios, walls, or outdoor living features run higher. Our minimum for new projects is $5,000, and every project starts with a free on-site estimate and a firm written quote.

Do I need a landscape design before installing?

For a single project, like new sod or one planting bed, usually not. When a project touches grading, lawn, beds, and hardscape together, a design saves money because it gets the order of work right and keeps you from tearing out new work later.

Can I install my landscape design in phases?

Yes. Many of our plans are built in stages, with grading, drainage, and lawn first and a patio or planting beds the next season. The plan is drawn so each phase fits the next.

What plants do well in Knoxville?

Hollies, boxwoods, hydrangeas, crape myrtles, and native perennials like coneflower and black-eyed Susan handle Knoxville's clay and humid summers well. For privacy screens, see our guide to evergreen trees for privacy in Tennessee. We match plants to your sun, soil, and how much upkeep you want.

When is the best time to start a landscaping project?

Fall is ideal for planting trees and shrubs and for fescue lawns. Late spring and summer are best for Bermuda and zoysia sod. Design, grading, and hardscape can happen most of the year. See when to start landscaping in Knoxville.

Can you work with my HOA's landscaping rules?

Yes. If your neighborhood requires approval, send us the guidelines and we will build the plan around them and give you what you need to submit.
