Custom stone and brick outdoor fireplaces for Knoxville, Farragut, Oak Ridge, and Lenoir City
An outdoor fireplace is the one feature that turns a patio into a room. It anchors the seating, blocks the wind, throws heat in one direction, and keeps the backyard in use from October into March, the months when most Knoxville patios sit empty.
Gladiator SOD and Landscaping builds wood-burning and gas outdoor fireplaces in natural stone, brick, and block, from the poured footing to the cap. The company is owner-led, and the owner is a mason, so the stonework on your fireplace is done by our own crew, not handed off to a subcontractor.

Most outdoor fireplaces sold in Knoxville are prefab kits with a veneer glued on, set on a patio that was never meant to carry them. We build the other kind. Here is what that means on your job:
Every fireplace is designed for the house it sits behind. Most of our Knoxville builds use natural fieldstone or ledgestone, full brick, or concrete block with a natural or manufactured stone veneer, and we will tell you plainly which one fits your budget and your home. Styles run from traditional stacked stone with a rough-cut mantel to clean modern lines in linear brick or smooth veneer.
Popular additions on our builds:
The fireplace can be set on a new paver patio or a stamped concrete patio, or tied into a patio you already have if the base can carry it.

A fire pit is open on all sides, cheaper, and better for a crowd sitting in a circle. An outdoor fireplace is a wall of heat that faces your seating, so it works on a breezy evening when a fire pit would have everyone shifting chairs to dodge the smoke. It also gives the patio a permanent focal point and something to build a pergola or pavilion against. If your backyard is mostly for the two of you and a few friends, and you want to use it in January, the fireplace wins. If it is for big cookouts in July, start with a fire pit. We build both and will tell you which one fits your yard.
A fireplace rarely goes in alone. The best-looking backyards we build in Knoxville are planned as one project: the patio sized to the fireplace, seating walls that match its stone, a pergola or covered structure over the seating, and often an outdoor kitchen on the opposite side. On sloped lots in Farragut and West Knoxville, a retaining wall is usually part of the same pour. Doing it as one job with one crew is cheaper than adding pieces over three summers, and everything matches.
We build outdoor fireplaces across the Knoxville area, including:

National cost guides quote anything from $3,000 to $25,000, which is useless for planning. In Knoxville, most of the masonry outdoor fireplaces we build fall in the $10,000 to $20,000 range, and a large stone fireplace with a pizza oven, wood boxes, and seating walls, or a fireplace built together with a new patio, runs above $20,000.
Five things move the number: overall size and chimney height, natural stone versus veneer versus brick, wood-burning versus gas, how much site prep and footing the lot needs, and add-ons. Our project minimum is $5,000. The fastest way to a real number is a free on-site estimate.
Knoxville sits in a valley. Cold air settles in from November through February, evenings drop into the 30s, and the ground under most yards is red clay that holds water and moves with every freeze. A fireplace set on a slab, or on a patio base built for foot traffic, will crack at the mortar joints within a few seasons. That is the failure we get called to look at most often, and it is the reason every fireplace we build starts with its own footing.
Draft is the other thing that separates a fireplace you use from one you look at. The firebox depth, smoke shelf, and flue size have to be proportioned to each other, or smoke rolls out the front on a still night. We build those parts to proven ratios rather than guessing, which is why a Gladiator fireplace burns clean with the doors of the house open twenty feet away.
Customers in Farragut and Knoxville have had us build patios and fire features together as one project, and that is the work we are proudest of: the fireplace, the patio under it, the walls around it, all built by the same crew.

Most masonry outdoor fireplaces we build in Knoxville fall between $10,000 and $20,000, and large stone fireplaces with add-ons or a new patio run above $20,000. Size, stone type, wood versus gas, site prep, and extras like a pizza oven or seating walls are what move the price. We give a free on-site estimate and a firm written quote.
A fireplace throws heat in one direction and blocks wind, so it is the better choice for a patio you want to use in cold weather. A fire pit is open on all sides, costs less, and suits a crowd. We build both; see our fire pit installation page for the other option.
Wood gives you the crackle, the smell, and the highest heat, and needs a wood supply and ash cleanup. Gas lights instantly, burns clean, and needs a gas line or propane tank run to the fireplace. Many of our Knoxville customers choose wood for the main firebox and add a gas starter. We walk through both at the estimate.
A permanent masonry fireplace with a chimney usually does, and requirements differ between the City of Knoxville, Knox County, Farragut, and Loudon County, plus any HOA rules. We confirm what applies to your address and walk you through it as part of the job.
Yes. A masonry fireplace weighs several tons and cannot sit on a standard patio base. We pour a dedicated concrete footing sized for the structure and for East Tennessee clay, which shifts with freeze-thaw. Skipping the footing is the most common reason outdoor fireplaces crack.
After the footing cures, a full masonry fireplace typically takes a few weeks depending on size, stone, and weather. Prefab kits go faster, but they are not what we build. You get a schedule with your quote.
Often, yes. We cut out the section where the fireplace will sit, pour the footing, and rebuild the patio surface around it. If the existing base cannot carry the weight, we will tell you and price a new patio instead of building on a problem.
Burn seasoned hardwood only, keep a cap on the chimney, and look over the mortar joints and cap each fall. Every few years a breathable water repellent on the stone helps in our wet winters. Done right, there is not much else to it.
